[LR 1/6] How to build a business you can run from anywhere
So here's the deal: you need to quit your job.
Right? Maybe at one point you loved doing it. You were excited, you did amazing work, and you really felt like you were doing something important.
But as the years have worn on, you've lost all that excitement.
Maybe it's the politics and drama you have to deal with.
Maybe it's the early mornings, 10 hour days, and exhausted nights.
Maybe it's the stress - and the decline in health that comes with it.
Maybe it's a boss that you don't want to be working for anymore.
Or maybe it's just the fact that you've realized life is short and should be spent exploring the world, and spending time with family, and dedicating yourself to your side projects, and learning new skills, and doing work you actually love - basically all the things that make you feel the most alive and happy and fulfilled and human in the first place.
But there's one little problem: where do you even begin? You've looked into building your own online business to replace your job…
You read about building niche web sites…
And ecommerce stores…
And online courses…
And creating your own Etsy stores…
And starting a blog…
And tons of other ideas that sound great on paper…
But you have no clue where to start. Right?
You don't know if you have an idea for a course. Or maybe you want to build niche sites but have tried and gotten nowhere. Or maybe you don't have the tech skills to do any of that stuff. Or maybe you've been trying to do this stuff for a while now and have made exactly $0.
Either way, you're still trapped at your job. You stay because you need the money it provides to pay your bills, but you're desperate to quit because of the freedom it's robbing from you.
Not to mention all the people who tell you you should be grateful for what you've got. Or what a great job you have. Or how lucky you are to have it.
Ok, I want you to take a pause right here.
Take a deep breath in…then release. Ahhhh :)
A few years ago I was in exactly the same position.
The breaking point for me was when I managed to get two weeks off from my finance job to take a trip to Brazil (which was all my vacation time for the year) - and had the time of my life. Like all the stress and anxiety I didn't even know I had lifted away and I felt completely alive for the first time in years.
I easily packed more stories into those two weeks than I had the past two years.
And on my second to last day, while I was strolling down Copacabana Beach and soaking in how amazing the last two weeks had been…
The anxiety started coming back as I realized I'd have to be back in "real life" in a few days - without any time off to be able to have an experience like this for another 12 months.
And that's when it struck me…
Wait a minute. Why should I dread having to go back to "real life"?
I should be excited to wake up every day. I should be living a life that leaves me feeling completely content, and happy, and fulfilled all the time.
A life that I don't feel the need to "escape" from.
And right there it's like a switch was flipped in my head.
I couldn't stay at my job. I needed to stop dreaming and start my own business - something I could run from anywhere in the world on my own terms, and that would fund my dream life. For me at the time that meant travel - and LOTS of it.
So I started researching. And for the next few months, in the few spare hours I had at night after my job, I tried everything I listed out at the beginning of this email. The niche sites, the affiliate marketing, the ecommerce stores, the online courses. And I got absolutely nowhere with any of them. I didn't have the tech skills or marketing knowledge to make them work.
And to be honest, I felt like a failure. Everyone made it seem so easy. Like, "Hey you just do this and you'll have a passive income machine in a week."
Which scared me. What if I never figure this out?
Am I going to be stuck behind a desk forever?
Putting my dreams on hold forever?
And I probably would have stayed worrying like that for years…
Except that something amazing happened: a shake-up at work forced me to walk away from my job. Which then allowed me to say "screw it!" and travel to Thailand with a one-way ticket and some meager savings. And while I was over there I was able to meet up with a few location independent entrepreneurs - people living the kind of life I wanted to live.
And that's where I was able to see how they were making their livings. Hint: it WASN'T with ecommerce stores and niche sites.
In fact it was so much simpler than that.
So I started copying what they were doing.
And just like that I was making a living with the simplest online business.
Month by month, I strategically built that business following what I saw everyone else doing - until I was making more than enough to live back in the USA, but on my own terms. Traveling 3-4 months out of the year and spending the other 8-9 at home with my girlfriend (now wife)…
All while reading, golfing, doing work I love, and being happier than I'd been in years.
And to this day, more than six years later, I'm still living that dream life.
I don't need to ask for vacation time. I don't need to wake up to an alarm clock. And not only am I making more money than I ever did at my old job, but I'm able to help more people and give back to the world and connect with more incredible entrepreneurs doing cool stuff than I ever could have imagined before.
So here's the plan:
Over the next 6 emails, I'm going to show you exactly how I did it.
I'm talking about exactly what I observed so many entrepreneurs doing in Thailand - and how you can do the same thing to break free from your job for good in the next two to three months. No special tech or marketing skills required.
And then how you can systematically build on that business month after month until you've got your dream business on your hands.
Something that you love to run - and that brings you joy, not stress.
Sound good? I'll be sending you one email per day…
Each email building on the previous lesson.
Until by the end of day 6, you know exactly what to do next.
And it all starts with one simple assignment: I want you to pull out a piece of paper, a pen, and a timer - and take 5 minutes to write out your perfect day.
Who do you spend it with? Where are you located? What time do you wake up? What time do you go to bed? What do you do, and for how long, and how do you feel while you do it?
Take more than 5 minutes if you can.
In fact take an afternoon to do this if possible.
I really want you to plot out a day that you can look at and think, "That's perfect." Where just thinking about it causes you to breathe a sigh of relief.
Cool? It's critical you do this and have it written out…
Because tomorrow we're going to reverse engineer that perfect day. And then over the following days design your business around that day - not the other way around.
And ultimately leave you with a simple business you love that pays your bills…
While giving you the freedom to live that perfect day every day.
You'll see what I mean tomorrow. This is going to be fun :)
